The Oost Limburg Hospital is a Belgian hospital with more than 1,000 beds and nearly 4,000 employees. The hospital is spread over four campuses in Lanaken, Genk, Maaseik and Waterschei. On the latter campus, in the André Dumont Medical Center, Priva ECO has been controlling the cooling and heating for some time, on top of the existing building management system.
“This is a fairly recent building, which was taken into use some five years ago,” explains Stefan Wagemans. “Consultations only take place during the day, unlike the rest of the hospital, where there is 24/7 activity. That means that you do have some leeway. The intention is that in the morning everything is at the right temperature before the first visitors arrive. In the evening the temperature can start to drop even before the last one pulls the door behind him. "
Rigid building management systems
That is a less obvious job than it seems. Stefan Wagemans: “Classic building management systems are by nature quite rigid. The settings are usually pre-programmed and allow little flexibility. Moreover, manufacturers often build in a lot of margin to avoid as many comfort complaints as possible. ”
And all that while every building is different. “One building is up to the right temperature after half an hour at an outside temperature of 10 degrees, while others may take longer or shorter. But even when the sun is shining or when it is freezing outside, every building reacts differently. Everything depends on the physical characteristics of the building, the level of insulation, its orientation, and so on. This means that standard settings are never really optimal. This affects both energy consumption and comfort level. ”
Priva ECO offers the perfect solution for this. “The great thing about the system is that it takes many more parameters into account and over time adapts to the intrinsic qualities of the building. We noticed quite soon after implementation that our general comfort level improved quite significantly: the temperature is now ideal at all times. Moreover, we also expect to achieve good energy savings. ”
Finally, Stefan Wagemans is also very enthusiastic about Priva's approach. “In a pilot project it is important to work very closely together, in all openness and transparency. They do this well at Priva. They are straight-to-the-point and really listen to the customer, who knows the building through and through. Any adjustments are always made in consultation, so that you will not be faced with unpleasant surprises. Moreover, they only promise what they can actually deliver, and I really appreciate that. ”
